The Natural History Museum, Santa Maria, produced Summer Science Explorers for the second year in support of Santa Maria Parks and Recreation Department Summer Camp. The Science Explorer Program was hosted at the TNHMSM facility on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in July and early August. Age based programs which focus on the museum collection and science topics were presented. Teacher Misty Epperson, assisted by Santa Maria High student Jocelyn Ortiz, worked with state science frameworks on Bird, Rock and Bug programs. Thursday afternoon volunteer Wes Lingerfelt worked with older students in a “Rock Hounds” program polishing and learning about rocks and local geology. Live birds were brought in by volunteer bird rehabilitator Carol Powell and beehives were demonstrated by bee keeper John Hupp. Experiments and “hands on” activities included volcano creation and owl pellet dissection. A good time was had by all!
